One of the biggest mistake astrocartographers make when telling their clients where to travel using their astro map? Not looking at timing, Cyclocartography and transits. It’s important to time your travels well.

If you’ve followed me or my work you probably already know that astrocartography, or locational astrology, is used to find your best places to move or travel. 

That’s the where part of the equation.

But let’s take it one step further, shall we?

Time Your Travels Using Astrocartography

Let’s do what many mainstream astrocartographers don’t and add cyclocartography, or timing, into the mix. 

Cyclocartography is all about timing your travels and looking at planetary transits in real-time when deciding when to visit different planetary lines in the world. It’s the when aspect of locational astrology that makes your astro travels that much more intentional.

This is a great technique because it can help us decide when’s the best time to book a vacation, buy a new house, or launch something big in our business! 

We call this predictive astrology or the blending of location and timing techniques. And if you’re new to this it’s important to remember that the planetary lines on your map never change — but there’s one thing that does…

and it’s timing! 

Cyclocartography looks at the transits and progressions moving around the world at specific times of life. What we’re basically doing is seeing how the planets are moving in relation to the natal planets on your map. Visually, it’s like a moving overlay that shows planetary movements now vs your fixed planetary lines on your map. 

I use professional software, called Solar Fire, to open someone’s natal map and see when planets are moving toward, applying, or fading from their natal planetary line.

One of the best features of Solar Fire is the ability to see transits, secondary progressions  and cyclocartography at a glance on the map. You can animate the chart to see those lines moving which shows specific months, weeks, and even days, to relocate or travel to different parts of the world. 

What is Cyclocartography using Astro Maps

Cyclocartography is a combination of the progressions of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and the transits of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. It’s best to see a combination of progressions and transits!

For example, the Sun transits and moves very quickly, about one degree per day. 

So it takes about one month for the Sun to move through a zodiac sign, which is about 30 degrees.

You probably already know this about the Sun’s transits already — think Taurus season, Aries season, Scorpio season, etc. One zodiac sign each month. 

But because the Sun moves so quickly we want to use the progression of the Sun to see the long-term effects of what’s happening. 

That’s a super fast transit compared to a generational planet like Pluto that stays in a sign for many, many years. 

Using Progressions for the Inner Planets on Astrocartography Maps

If we’re looking at Sun’s progressions, we’re thinking of creative spirit, self-expression, leadership, goals, aspirations, and vitality. The Sun represents your goals and aspirations, your willpower, your life force, and your ego. It’s an authoritative kind of energy — a very big, bold light shining bright. 

When we see a Sun progression going over a specific area of the world, it’s activating those Sun themes. What does your soul aspire to do or embody? What are your goals? Where do you want to shine? 

Now we need to take it one step further…

Look to the astrocartography planetary line on the map

Now we look at the natal planetary lines in that specific location. 

If the Sun’s progressing over or hitting your natal Venus astrocartography line we’re looking at relationship themes, creativity, and money. If we’re looking at the Sun progressing over Mercury this indicates more communication, marketing, messaging, teaching, studying, or developing a new skill. 

Say, for example, you’re wanting to book a vacation to Portugal next Summer. 

Using predictive astrology techniques we could see when the energetic themes in that location would be supportive for you — so maybe you book your trip in September because you have benefic Jupiter transit hitting your natal Sun line at that time. 

Jupiter is all about expansion, abundance, and enthusiasm. Mix that Jupiter transit with a well-placed Sun AC line and you get optimism and self-confidence on steroids…during that time! What a lovely energy for a Summer vacation. 

Now we know your Sun line’s slicing directly through Lisbon with a Jupiter transit happening at this specific time. Now we know what to expect, energetically, for us in different parts of the world and use these amazing opportunities at our disposal.

Remember — what’s really important about astrocartography is that we’re relocating the birth chart to a new place in the world. 

Let’s say you’re born in California but you want to travel to Portugal. A professional astrocartographer would consider your relocated chart — essentially seeing how your birth chart would look if you were born in Portugal — and your cyclocartography (aka when’s the best time to visit based on transits and progressions.)

The amazing thing about cyclocartography is we’re getting a visual representation of what progressions and transits are happening on the relocated chart. For visual examples about how transits and progressions move over a map watch this video. It’s super helpful to actually see the movements!
