Hello kindred spirit! Welcome to the blog where I write about slow living, presence, astrocartography and working in tandem with our intuition and the cosmos ✨
Today’s blog post is all about the natal moon placement in our birth charts. The moon is important in that it shows us where we find comfort and safety. It’s where we seek to have our internal needs and desires being met. If we ever feel uncomfortable, our moon is our guide, highlighting to us that which is not in alignment and where we need to lean in towards.
“As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul…”
― Hermes Trismegistus
Are you Sun Ruled or Moon Ruled?
Our natal moon is important to all of us, however, those who have night charts may resonate more strongly with their moon sign than their sun sign, while those born with a day chart may resonate with their sun sign.
You can learn this by locating where your sun is placed in your natal chart: is the sun above the horizon, in the top half of your chart? You have a day chart and are sun ruled. Or is your natal sun located in the bottom half of your chart, or below the horizon? You then have a night chart and are moon ruled.
If you have any questions you’d like answered about your natal chart or natal promise, you can ask me a question here and I’ll send you a personalized video response after analyzing your chart!
Houses vs Signs
I once heard a brilliant analogy of the differences between the planets, signs and houses. It goes something like this: your life is like a stage play, with the planets being the actors, the signs being the characters your planets are playing and the houses being the environment or scene your character is living within.
When we look at our natal charts, locating the areas of life where our planets are contained is important because it gives us more information as to how that area of life (family, career, physical body/appearance, friendships, money, spouse, travel, studies, mental health, etc) will play out for us in our natal promise.
I won’t be covering the zodiac signs in this blog post, but just know that the sign your moon is in colors the flavor or energy of how you seek comfort and how you have your desires met.
Let’s get into the meat tofu of it!
Self Care by Your Natal Moon (in Houses)
The houses in a natal chart show us the different areas of life and give us context as to what is needed for us to feel good! Where we have our natal moon placed can tell us a lot about where we seek comfort, safety and nourishment in our lives. When we focus on that particular area of life and give ourselves the adequate self-care needed, we open ourselves to feeling fully aligned with our natal promise. The day-to-day feels so much lighter and so much more fun!
Here are the 12 houses and how to care for yourself based on where your moon is placed natally:
Natal Moon 1st House – A natal moon in the 1st house is the self or one’s own identity. Comfort is achieved through independence and self-reliance. A natal moon in the 1st house reflects a deep need for one to create their own safety in life rather than relying on anyone else.
Natal Moon 2nd House – A natal moon in the 2nd house represents comfort through the accumulation of one’s possessions, finances and ownership. It is also a reflection of one’s self-worth. How one values oneself. The second house also rules food! If you have your natal moon here, you may seek comfort and safety through ownership, security, and possessing things whether that be income, possessions, stylish designs or real estate.
Natal Moon 3rd House – A natal moon is joyous in the 3rd house! For those with natal moons in the 3rd, this is a place of busy day-to-day activity. You may seek comfort through daily encounters with family members, siblings, cousins, or people you see in your local community every day. There is a sense of nourishment through busyness.
Natal Moon 4th House – A natal moon in the 4th reflects safety through one’s home, childhood and relationship to the parents. It often shows someone who seeks comfort in having a private, steady home life. The 4th house represents the literal home that one lives in.
Natal Moon 5th House – A natal moon in the 5th shows someone who feels nourishment through the act of creation, whether that be a creative project, artistic endeavor, romantically or sexually. The 5th house is a place of play, fun and children so either having children or having playful leisure time will be important as an act of self-care for those with this natally.
Natal Moon 6th House – A natal moon in the 6th shows someone who gets their needs met through tasks and wellness. This is a place in which one manages the essentials: the tasks, the to-do list, the everyday maintenance such as yoga, exercise, health & wellness, nutrition, healing. Being productive and getting things done and checked off the list makes a 6th house natal moon feel very safe, indeed. Side note: the 6th house also represents pets! Having animals or pets may also be a desire.
Natal Moon 7th House – A natal moon in the 7th house shows that one receives comfort through one on one relationships. The 7th house represents the spouse or other person. (It also indicates client work.) Being mirrored by another is a core need for those with this placement.
Natal Moon 8th House – A natal moon in the 8th house craves utmost trust from others and outside sources. It’s an intimate, often “taboo” place in the chart as it is also about the other person, or people, specifically the assets, resources or shared finances from others, oftentimes the spouse. The 8th house represents finances like stocks, investments, crypto, taxes, credit cards, and debt. It represents income given to one from other people. It’s the opposite of the 2nd house, where one creates in order to earn income, this is more of a passive income type energy.
Natal Moon 9th House – A natal moon in the 9th shows that one receives comfort and nourishment through knowledge, higher learning and international travel. This is the ultimate spiritual seeker. One with this placement feels comfort in gaining wisdom. To take care of yourself, expand your knowledge whether than be through education, religion or learning about different philosophies! The 9th house represents travel, culture and foreign lands – so travel is the ultimate way to feel nourished!
Natal Moon 10th House – A natal moon in the 10th house feels comfort through the act of accomplishing things on a public scale. This is a place of contribution – a deep craving to make your mark and give something to the world. This is the most public place, so being public with one’s life is often an internal desire for those with this placement. With the moon here, there is a need to be validated through impact. In order to feel safe within, one needs to project outwards and by making a name for oneself in the world.
Natal Moon 11th House – A natal moon in the 11th feels safe through connection, whether that be through friends or having a variety of networks with people around the world. There is a desire to be spread out, to have a vast web of connections and not be contained to any one place or person. The 11th house is also a place of hopes and dreams. Lovely 11th house moons always need to continue sparking their dreams and sustaining their hopeful visions for the future in order to feel secure and nourished.
Natal Moon 12th House – A natal moon in the 12th reflects the need to be private, to have a secluded inner world in which no other person can see. This is the dark, mysterious unseen place, so for spiritual 12 house moons, it is important to develop and cultivate your internal spiritual practices and to make time to be alone. Introvert time and inner healing is how one feels nourished and comforted. Many healers and spiritual teachers have this placement. The beautiful thing about 12th house moons is that there is no need for anything external to validate them. No amount of money or career success will help those with this placement to feel nourished as their inner safety comes from within – from the most private and unseen places. Just beautiful. 💕🌙
Next, Look to the Moon’s Ruler
Next, it’s important to look at the moon’s ruler – Cancer! Where do you have Cancer natally in your chart? That will give you some additional information as to where you practice self-care and what you need in life to fully nourish yourself.
Those two houses (or areas of life) are where you seek nourishment and how you can better practice self-care in your life – based on your natal moon placement!
Where do you have your natal moon placed? Do these descriptions resonate with you?
That’s it for today’s post, lovely! I’m going to nourish myself and tend to my own moon’s ruler in the 9th (and my natal moon is in the 10th) by taking some online courses, reading a book on stoic philosophy and researching countries I’ve never traveled to before. 🤗
Here are some questions to leave you off with today…
→ In your life, where have you noticed that you seek nourishment?
→ Does your self care align with your natal moon placement’s needs?
