For the past year I have struggled friends.
Struggled with finding and creating community with like-minded creatives and visual artists. That was until I DM’d a fellow photographer in Washington D.C. and asked him if he was free to meet up to photograph around D.C. He told me about a photography group I should check out in the community and since then I have been hooked with photography meetup groups around Washington D.C.! If you ever get the chance to visit the DC metro area (or you may even have some groups in your area as well!), I totally recommend collaborating and meeting other artists. Whether it’s to get some new images for your portfolio, to meet new friends or simply to feel inspired, I totally recommend meeting up with a local group!
Here are my favorite 3 photography groups in D.C.
My favorite meet up – this local group gathers in urban locations around D.C. and gives you the chance to meet and photograph models in funky city spots! You’ll find vloggers, photographers and gorgeous models everywhere and it’s the perfect place for both models and photographers to add new work to their portfolio. The style is grungy and urban, but even if your photography style isn’t as street as their events tend to be, it’s still a great event to meet others and practice!
This group meets once a month, if not every 2 weeks and is a social event where you can roam and explore the city with other artists and learn as you go! I’ve met lots of new photographer friends at this meet up and walked away with more knowledge about my own camera! The focus tends to be on landscapes and cityscapes, but portrait photographers are always able to find a few models to practice on.
Ideal for the portrait photographer, this group schedules events around the D.C., Maryland and Virginia area and the style is more polished, bright, and classic. I love the photos that come from these meet ups, as it fits more with my editing style. You’ll find tons of models and photogs roaming about just as you would as Street Meet DC.
I cannot recommend enough how inspiring, uplifting and educational attending this meet ups can be for photographers and videographers and I strongly encourage you to get you and your camera out there the next time one of these events is meeting up!
