I am most inspired by close family relationships, sibling bonds and the playfulness and wonder that childhood gifts us. As a visual storyteller, I naturally turned to photography as a way to express my love for family ties, the simple joys that childhood brings and the connection between people.
For this session, I was inspired to photograph Jack and Ryan in their natural element: playing soccer, reading books and enjoying the summer sunshine outdoors in northern Central Park. We found time in the late summer afternoon, and I scouted some open shade surrounded by trees with ample-enough light above us for reflection.
Jack and Ryan, 13 and 11, are two brothers who naturally and joyfully embrace their sibling connection. They are close, connected and enjoyed laughing and chatting away during our light-hearted session. They love to play soccer with one another, and while Ryan enthusiastically loves practicing his kicks and jumps, Jack is a charismatic and joyous performer having previously sung and danced in Matilda on Broadway. I asked them to bring items they loved and cherished, and I was so excited and curious to see what they brought! Jack brought along his Matilda Playbill and Ryan his soccer ball. And what child doesn’t love and get instantly hooked on the fantastical story of Harry Potter?
It’s these simple joys: getting lost in a fantasy, playing soccer until the fading light retreats into night, cartwheeling on the grass that I am most inspired by.
It is these simple, wholesome experiences that children naturally gravitate towards and embrace. It is these choices that remind us grown-ups to cherish the everyday play in our present lives. It is, in essence, why I love photographing children: to remember and make time for play, imagination and shared joyful experiences.
We have so much to learn from kids, and as a kid-at-heart myself, I am always reminding myself to make time to play with the people in my life: my family.
